Naughty or not Fruity Yoghurt - Cooking with Marchi
Naughty or not Fruity Yoghurt

Is it healthy or not? The question is, if a dish contains both nutritious and less nutritious ingredients, can it still be considered healthy? What are your thoughts? Naughty or not Fruity Yoghurt?

For me, combining the best available pre- and probiotic vegan yogurt with organic wild blueberries and mangoes is healthy. But is it still healthy if you add your favorite sweets? In my case, it's vegan Oreos.

Most of you wrote on my social platform that it's still healthy, and of course both my brain and my heart I agree with you.

I believe that consuming this delightful combination brings joy to both you and your gut bacteria, among other benefits. To enhance it further, consider adding a bit of inulin and/or ground flaxseed. Your gut bacteria will be having a celebration, enjoying themselves immensely. As we know, keeping them, content will ensure your happiness as well.

I often use these combinations for healthy breakfast as well. For example, combining these fruits and yoghurt with cereals is a lovely healthy and crunch breakfast. You may mix the fruit with the yogurt beforehand but only add the cereal just before eating. In this way the bowl will remain nice and crunchy. I usually use my bio cereal without sweeteners, but sometimes I use my husband's Cheerios or other cereals like that. So, it's a mix of fruity sweetness, with flaky crunchiness and contrasting savory taste of the yoghurt. In my book it ticks all the boxes 😀.

Here are some variations of this healthy treat, suitable for either breakfast or dessert.

I understand that purchasing organic fruits and vegetables can be expensive. However, we can make informed choices by referring to the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists. The Dirty Dozen includes fruits and vegetables with the highest levels of pesticides, so it's recommended to buy organic options for these items. For example, blueberries and strawberries are on this list, so choosing organic is advisable.

Purchasing fresh and organic items can be quite expensive, so opt for frozen alternatives. Remember, these frozen products are picked at the height of their nutritional value and frozen shortly after. In contrast, fresh products can take days to reach store shelves. While the texture of frozen fruits and vegetables may not be ideal for every dish, they are perfectly acceptable for these bowls.

Why do I prefer organic wild blueberries?

As illustrated in the graph below, wild blueberries possess a significantly higher antioxidant score compared to regular blueberries. Antioxidants help repair the frequent damage in our body caused by a process known as oxidation. Therefore, a higher antioxidant content allows for more effective repair.

For this reason, I typically buy a large bag of frozen wild, organic blueberries and use the amount I need for my smoothies or breakfast. This approach is more cost-effective and still provides a significant repairing effect. These wild blueberries aren't very sweet, which is why I combine them with mangoes to add sweetness.

The good news is that mangoes are part of the Clean Fifteen, meaning they have some of the lowest pesticide levels, so buying organic isn't necessary. However, it's still recommended to buy frozen mangoes, as they thaw well and are very convenient. Check out the Clean Fifteen here.

Fruits + Yoghurt + Cereal or Biscuits

Some of my favorite combinations:

Fruits: I always go back to mangoes with blueberries. Add some organic strawberries or pineapples, kiwis or organic apples.

Pro- and prebiotic Vegan Yoghurt

I usually use the non-flavored yoghurt, but it's delicious using vanilla or other fruity flavors.

Add breakfast cereals or crumble your favorite vegan biscuits. Oreos are my guilty pleasure! What's yours? For cereals, I sometimes use my unsweetened, but crunchy organic cereals or my husband's favorites (just don't tell him), like Cheerios, Crunchy Nuts, or other slightly sweetened options.

So, how will you prepare it for yourself? There are numerous delicious variations.
